Find out how this common dental procedure eliminates toothaches.

Dealing with a toothache? If so, it could just mean that you need root canal therapy. Our Brighton, MI, family dentists Dr. Brian Petersburg Root_Canaland Dr. Brian Giammalva have performed countless root canals over the years in order to save damaged teeth. Find out more about this procedure, how it can stop the pain you’re experiencing and why a root canal is really not something worth stressing over.

How does a root canal get rid of pain?

The hard outer layers of the tooth, known as the enamel and dentin layers, do not have any nerves so they can’t feel pain; however, inside the tooth is a soft-tissue structure known as the dental pulp. The pulp does contain nerves, which means that when bacteria somehow manage to get inside the tooth and infect the pulp this leads to a toothache (and usually a pretty nasty one!).

When you come into our office to have one of our Brighton, MI, dentists treat your toothache we will run X-rays to see if the pulp is infected and whether the bacteria has spread to the root canals or the jawbone. If the tooth is still viable, we will simply perform a root canal. The goals of root canal treatment are to:

  • Remove the infected dental pulp
  • Disinfect the inside of the tooth and the root canals
  • Seal up the root canals to prevent re-infection
  • Fill the inside of the tooth with special material to rebuild and strengthen it
  • Place a dental crown over the tooth to preserve what’s left

But I’ve heard root canals hurt!

Contrary to what you might have heard, a root canal is a simple procedure that will get rid of your toothache by removing the source of your pain. This means that the pain should go away not long after your root canal is performed. Plus, a root canal is a very simple procedure that does not require a lot of invasive techniques. In fact, it can be performed right here by one of our dentists. The area around the tooth will be numbed with local anesthesia so you won’t feel anything.

Whatever you do, do not ignore a toothache! Ignoring your toothache could risk losing the tooth altogether. If you are dealing with a toothache in Brighton, MI, it’s important that you get treated right away.
